Are you experiencing a one-sided love? If so, have you heard of Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine in Kawagoe City, Saitama Prefecture?
This shrine is also known as the ‘God of Marriage,’ as it honors deities associated with men, women, and family bonds.
What kind of shrine is the Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine?
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is believed to have been established approximately 1,500 years ago, during the second year of Emperor Kinmei’s reign in the Kofun period. Since the construction of Kawagoe Castle in 1457 by Michizane Ota and his son Michikan during the Muromachi period, the shrine has been revered as the tutelary deity of the castle and its domain by successive lords.
The current main shrine, adorned with intricate carvings, is designated as an important cultural asset of Saitama Prefecture. Known as a god of marriage since ancient times, the shrine is said to bless visitors with connections and harmonious relationships.

Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine is dedicated not only to marriage but also to fostering family harmony and marital happiness.
Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine enshrines five deities and is revered as the “God of Family Harmony” and the “God of Marital Fulfillment and Marriage.” This is because the shrine includes two deities who are considered a husband-and-wife pair.

There is a legend at Kawagoe Hikawa Shrine that if you take a pebble from the shrine grounds and cherish it, you will be blessed with a good marriage.
The “matchmaking beads” are created by a priestess who purifies herself, collects the pebbles one by one, wraps them in a linen net, and purifies them each morning before offering them at the shrine. When you meet the person with whom you will spend the rest of your life, visit the shrine together and return the “matchmaking bead” as an offering.
